The Marriage of the Living Dark' is the eighth and final book of the original version of the Chung Kuo series by David Wingrove. It was originally published in 1997. The same title was reused for the twentieth and final novel of the revised version of the series.
The Marriage of the Living Dark was originally meant to be the penultimate volume of the Chung Kuo series. However, the publishers requested that Wingrove conclude the series with this volume, resulting a severe compression and rushing of events that some fans and critics felt rendered the book unreadable. Wingrove agreed with their assessment, and his frustration with the final book provided the impetus that eventually led to the twenty-volume reissuing of the series beginning in 2011.
